Built in 1892, this Romanesque Revival brownstone, located on the edge of the Stuyvesant Heights Historic District at 407 Stuyvesant Avenue, is a serious eye-grabber, awash in well-preserved period detail. It’s got another point of distinction as well: It was briefly home to pioneering baseball great Jackie Robinson.

This is not one of the several New York City homes commonly associated with Robinson — which include the nearby house at 526 MacDonough Street as well as homes in East Flatbush and Addisleigh Park, Queens. Robinson lived here for a few weeks when he first arrived in Brooklyn, before moving to MacDonough Street, preservationist, Halstead agent and Brownstoner commenter Morgan Munsey told Brownstoner. Visitors will notice a plaque outside the house noting Robinson once lived there, Munsey added.

The man who broke baseball’s color barrier presumably walked the 20-foot home’s inlaid parquet floors, slid open its six pocket doors, regarded his image in the huge and stunning pier mirror in the front parlor, laid his hand on the carved mahogany newel post, and admired its seven decorative fireplaces, tin ceilings, wainscoting, carved moldings, plaster detailing, stained glass, and built-in cabinets. He may even have washed up after a day of slugging fastballs in one of two original marble sinks.

The house is set up with a two-bedroom rental on the top floor, which sits above a triplex with two bedrooms and a full parlor floor, with the kitchen on the garden level.

The photographs depict one renovated bath with a huge walk-in shower tiled in stone and the dining area in one of the kitchens. The listing, from Halstead brokers Ban Leow, Howard Ramial and Jevon Gratineau, offers no word on any recent upgrading or on the condition of the mechanicals. As mentioned, the details look to be very well preserved, and everything else pictured looks to be in good shape (though the backyard could use some attention).

The house last sold in January 2014 for $1.5 million, according to public records. It was a House of the Day in 2011, when it was asking $925,000, and again in 2013, when it wanted $1.65 million.

The current ask: $2.875 million. Think they will get their ask? What do you think of the house?
