Our open house picks this weekend could all use work in varying degrees; some demand it, some merely request it. A mixed bag style-wise, they include a classic brownstone, a fully detached 20th century and a former commercial property. Points on the compass include Prospect Heights, Bed Stuy, Bushwick and Flatlands.

First up, a two-story rectangular building at the corner of Underhill Avenue and Prospect Place in Prospect Heights. A 19th century frame building that’s been stuccoed and otherwise altered, this one shows up as a store on historic maps (and according to some sources housed a liquor store in 1888). It’s fairly drab on the inside, where you’ll find an apartment on each floor — a three-bedroom above and a two-bedroom below — and a basement with a washer and dryer. It’s a prime candidate for reimagining, but it looks to be in livable shape if you wanted to take it as-is.

Next is a four-story brownstone Greene Avenue in Bed Stuy, across the street from Herbert Von King Park. (The listing says the park is “a short walk” away, a rare example of listing understatement.) Photos are scant for this one, but they suggest a place that has details and needs work. The listing mentions wainscoting, hardwood floors and “gorgeous fireplaces.” A three-family, it’s laid out with an owner’s duplex and two rentals.

Moving on to Bushwick, we find a brick row house with an angled bay front. Like the last one, it’s got some nice original details; it also looks like it needs some attention. There’s paneling to be removed, carpeting to be pulled up, and very likely kitchens and baths to be updated; who knows what else. A two-story, it’s got a pair of floor-through apartments.

It’s out to Flatlands for the last one — East 53rd Street to be exact, between avenues S and T. This one’s a fully detached house with a driveway and a covered front terrace on the second floor. It’s a duplex, with three bedrooms, a living room, dining room and eat-in kitchen. Inside photos reveal acoustic tile ceilings, wall paneling, linoleum floors and a kitchen that could use an upgrade. So, some work is needed — there’s a new roof and hot water heater and a renovated bathroom though. There’s a finished basement with a bathroom and a separate entrance.
