Here’s a fine figure of a Bed Stuy brownstone, in prime shape and full of restored original detail. Built in the 1890s and designed by Amzi Hill, it’s at 740 Macon Street, on the neighborhood’s eastern end.
If it looks familiar it may be because we featured it as a House of the Day a few months back, complimenting its charms but also noting the listing’s subpar photos and lack of a floor plan. It’s now been relisted with a different broker, who’s supplied a floor plan and photos that confirm the place is a looker.
Note the six tiled fireplaces, tin ceilings, pocket doors, inlaid parquet floors and crown moldings, along with the wainscoting and fretwork in the stairway and the large pier mirror in the living room. The listing says the house has been restored over the past two decades by the owners, who seem to have done their fair share of stripping paint off lovely original woodwork.
The floor plan reveals a five-bedroom triplex over a garden rental, and a quirk to the layout of the main unit, which places the kitchen on the top floor. Not everyone will thrill to that arrangement, though there are other ways one could structure things without too much effort, including splitting the house into double duplexes or creating a lower triplex with an upper rental.
As it stands, the lower unit is essentially a studio with an eat-in kitchen, given the lack of a bedroom, but it holds a good-sized kitchen with stone counters, a center island and an oversized French-doored refrigerator.
Listed by Kathryn Swift and Michael Quinn of Sotheby’s International, the house is asking $2.3 million. That is quite high for these parts, but it’s a fetching property — and the block’s a literal prizewinner, having taken top honors in the Brooklyn’s Greenest Block competition a few years back.
