This rental in a circa 1860 wood frame Italianate “villa” in Fort Greene was already pricey nine years ago when we featured it as both a Rental of the Day and Building of the Day. 158 South Oxford Street is a two-family standalone with notable street presence, and the current rental is the lower unit, which includes the parlor floor, a driveway, private garden, two porches and a sauna.

The photos show spacious, rambling rooms and tons of huge windows all around. (Though they do have bars on them.) There are original black marble mantels and wood-burning fireplaces, lots of original woodwork, high ceilings, and a beautifully renovated kitchen and bathroom that hold up to current tastes.

The spacious galley kitchen has marble and wood counters, white subway tile walls, Moroccan-style patterned cement tile floors and lots of windows. The bathroom, on the lower level, has a wood sauna, glass-enclosed step-in shower, white subway tile walls and slate tile floors.

The lower level is more modern in style than the parlor floor, with less historic woodwork and some nice built-in shelving in one of the bedrooms.

It’s in a choice location around the corner from the Der Schwarze Koelner beer garden at a central intersection of Fort Greene and across the street from South Oxford Park, but does the general inflation of prices justify a near doubling of the rent from $6,400 to $12,000 now?

It can be rented furnished or unfurnished, and is not available until September. Worth it for a very charming and spacious rental?
