bike-lane-thumb-0610.jpgThe Brooklyn Paper is chock full of stories about bike lane conflict today. First up is more drama surrounding the new lanes on Prospect Park West. As you may recall, DOT’s decision to axe one lane of car traffic to make way for a two-way bike lane was done despite opposition by Marty Markowitz and many others in the driver camp. Now, it turns out, some pedestrians who are used to only having to look one way before crossing are up in arms. Meanwhile, down in Bay Ridge, Community Board 10 voted earlier this week against two new proposed bike lanes. “The city is bent on taking away driving lanes for cars,” said Allen Bortnick, a member of Community Board 10. “We are not going to be able to live with this comfortably.”

  1. “How are people in Buenos Aries not obese?”

    Because they ride bikes. 😉

Actually, it’s not a huge biking city but people walk a lot and they have a TON of sex which as you know is a big calorie burner. 🙂

Seriously though…most people outside the U.S. have mastered the art of eating in moderation.

  2. “that’s why i dont give one crap how much people use their cars, how much people litter, etc etc. i’ve done my part for mother nature, i’ve chosen not to breed. and that ladies and gentlemen is the ultimate green sacrifice.

If you’re spraying aerosol the ultimate green sacrifice for you would be seppuku. I’m sure 11217 can provide you with a selection of knives.

  3. Given the fact that there is a bike lane a few feet away in Prospect Park, there was no reason for the PPW bike lane.

Everyone talks about how it would be great if more people biked and fewer drove. But how many current bicyclists would have used a car for their trip? How many would have used a subway or bus? My guess is that most bicyclists would have walked or used transit – most of the bike lanes are in the less auto-oriented sections of NYC.

If my hunch is correct, the bike lanes are not removing cars from the traffic stream, are causing the cars (and buses!) to talk longer, idle more and spew more pollution into the air, and are taking revenue from the cash-strapped MTA.

    Great policy, eh?

  4. orestes, you have summed up in one paragraph exactly what and i find deplorable in 11217’s personality! definitely one giant cornball of santimony, which actually sums up a lot of people these days.

i will give 11217 for one thing. he has not made children. and that is the single biggest green thing a human being CAN do! having one child is actually equivalent to driving 100 miles per day. think about it..

  5. I don’t understand those bumper badgers. In Brooklyn its the corners of your bumper that get scraped as people squeeze in and out of parking spots. Those bumper badger’s just protect the middle of the bumper where none of the action happens.

I’m just envious I didn’t invnet something that costs little and has no actual practical use but people think they need it.

  6. LLstone, some of those hills in Seattle cant be climbed by a bike – not even a lance armstrong can climb it (ie one has to apply brake in the car while waiting for light to change else car slides back)
