This morning Dale Caldwell  (pictured here standing in front of the Wall of Fame at the club) was at the West Side Tennis Club in Forest Hills to talk about the New York Tennis Open at Forest Hills this summer.

The event will be more than just tennis.  July 4th – 7th will include a family fun fest, fashion expo, a jazz festival, a film festival (with help from some friends at Tribeca Film Fest) as well as a book fest. The event will use the grounds at the club and the stadium.

“New York has a championship for nearly every sport under the sun. Why not tennis?” said Caldwell. He has recently published a book called Tennis in New York.

Winners at local events will get spots in the draw and 30,000 in prize money will be awarded throughout the draws of 16. Players will gain entry through, among other methods, winning local park tournaments representing boroughs around the city. David Dinkins is the honorary chairman of the NY Open.

There’s going to be a “Breakfast at Wimbledon” viewing of the finals on Sunday as well.
