Ridgewood — it’s just not that hip! At least that’s what the locals say in an article by The Forum. According to them, “The thing is, what makes neighborhoods like Ridgewood, on the border of Bushwick and the source of recent speculation about its rising popularly, so attractive are also factors that will prevent them from becoming the next ‘hot place.'” The article goes on to say that Ridgewood lacks the warehouses of Williamsburg and Bushwick along with the swaths of vacant land needed for large-scale development. Not only that, the absence of a “blight-flight-return-rebirth” in Ridgewood has allowed for a solid, longtime middle class. A Ridgewood transplant, who migrated across the borough border from Bushwick, says the majority of newcomers are “regular, hard-working people.” But is it really enough to keep the Brooklyn hipsters from taking over?

  1. This is what I tell people about Sunnyside. It’s too “normal” to be taken over by hipsters.

That being said, if we take a look at Park Slope, yuppies are the ones who changed that area, not really youth or “cool” kids. I think both Ridgewood and Sunnyside may be “gentrified” but by wealthier, working people who want to raise city kids without the Manhattan costs.

    • I don’t see that happening. The south and southeast parts will turn somewhat hipster but not drastically since so many middle class people own their homes and will probably stay put if a few restaurants and other businesses pop up. The northern areas have horrible transit and the housing stock is definitively Queens, which won’t appeal to wealthy people with kids who want Park Slope. If any area will become a wealthy family oriented area like park slope it would be Ditmas Park/Prospect Park south since it offers huge historic houses, is near Park Slope, Prospect Park and the botanical Garden. it’s like the suburbs in the city. The only area in Sunnyside that might appeal to the wealthy upper middle class is the small section north of Skillman ave. and 39th ave. but even then.
