It’s time for our weekly Queens food blog roundup, where we show you what the local food press has in store. For this meal, we’ve selected an Turkish cuisine, half-shell treats, homestyle meatballs, and cookies. Please have a seat and your server will be right with you.
Course 1: Salad
This week Chopsticks and Marrow discovers an overlooked Turkish treat, menemen. No, it’s not named after the relentless Muppets song. It’s a simple breakfast dish of red peppers, tomatoes, and scrambled egg served at Grill 43 in Sunnyside. At just under $6, it’s an inexpensive, delicious Mediterranean start to your day.
Course 2: Entree
Fooditka spent some time getting to know the happy hour appetizer menu at Alewife, one of LIC’s best outdoor bars. Along with a Wednesday-night slider and beer deal for $10, they serve up perfect raw oysters on the half shell and some tasty garlic fries. If you’re looking for a great, casual place to drink eat outside, then stop on by.
Course 3: Main
If you have a big party, picnic, or potluck coming up, The Glorified Tomato has released into the world Granny Martha’s meatball recipe. With four pounds of beef and a healthy dose of tomato sauce, these comfort-food-in-a-bite would go well over a plate of spaghetti or a bed of egg noodles. Their recipe makes 64 (!) so make sure you have some friends to help you eat them.
Course 4: Dessert
We Heart Astoria has a lovely writeup by Single Girl Cookie’s Renee as she bakes cookies and delivers them to Engine Company 312 in Ditmars. The gigantic fire plug cookie looks tasty as do the chocolate-chip. We just wish she’d deliver some to us!
That’s it for this week. Stay tuned for more from the best of Queens food blogs.
