The FDNY announced that the cause of the five-alarm fire at the Jackson Heights commercial building on 37th Avenue was an overloaded power strip. DNAinfo reports “it’s not immediately clear where the power strip was in the building.” The fire, however, did start on the third floor, the location of Plaza College. And while a full vacate order is in effect at the building, the Departments of Buildings deemed it did not have to be torn down.
Meanwhile, Queens Courier writes about businesses and organizations trying to find a new home after the fire. The fire dislocated both the nonprofit organization Queens Community House and an LGBT Senior Center. Queen Community House secured space at the Sunnyside Community Services to continue its Adult Education English classes; the LGBT center will operate out the Queens Community House’s Kew Gardens Community Center.
