Thanks to Queens Crap for pointing us in the direction of this video that outlines the long, dramatic history of the RKO Keith’s Theater in Flushing. The video is full of historic and recent images of the theater, inside and out. It also outlines the many iconic performers and films shown here until the structure fell into disrepair. And of course, it details recent troubles after developer Thomas Huang was found guilty of partially gutting the landmarked interior and dumping 10,000 gallons of oil in the basement here. Last we heard, a developer bought the theater for $30,000,000 with plans to develop a 17-story, mixed-use apartment building.

  1. Probably the favorite theater of my youth. It was one of those 3000+ seat dinosaurs from the past with all kinds of ornate decorations and dark passageways to explore.

My junior high graduation was held there, to accommodate all the kids & their families.

It’s always been so sad to me what happened to it.
