Delays for Islamic School in South Flushing

An Islamic school planned for 78-31 and 78-39 Parsons Boulevard, in Flushing, is not open after promising to enroll students for September. Queens Chronicle reports that the school was waiting for the city to issue a certificate of occupancy for the organization — apparently, the school still doesn’t have it. The community knows very few details about the site, which is expected to hold 160 students. As you can see in the Google Maps photos above, the building it is located in was vacant for several years after housing a detox center, which closed in 2007. Since the Islamic School took the space it has cleared much of the weeds and trees.
