A little while back, City Spoonful put together a video of local Flushing resident Christine Colligan talking about what one can find in a typical Korean grocery store. They filmed at H & Y Marketplace in Flushing, where most staples in Korean cooking can be found. If you are not familiar with Korean ingredients and are interested in learning about them and perhaps delving into cooking dishes from this traditional cuisine, this video should be of help.

Some of the things they checked out were soy sauce (it’s a little different from Chinese soy sauce), sesame oil (combined with soy sauce gives a great flavor), sesame seed (also good with soy sauce and sesame oil), rice vinegar, apple vinegar, anchovy sauce, gochujang (hot pepper paste), daenjang (bean paste, like miso), rice, beans, kim (seaweed), and more.

Colligan also recommends learning two phrases in Korean – hello, or how are you (annyeonghaseyo?) and thank you (kamsahamnida).

H & Y Marketplace is located at 150-51 Northern Blvd, Flushing, NY 11354 (GMAP). They are open 24 hours.
