Here’s a roundup of our top posts in August:

5. Brazilian and Columbian cheese breads in Astoria, Jackson Heights and Elmhurst: Pao de Queijo and Pandebono

Yet another twist on the bread and cheese combo is to bake the cheese into the dough, form it into a little rounds and bake them into buns. Two excellent examples of this approach are the Brazilian pao de queijo (which translates into “cheese bread”) and the Colombian pandebono (which translates into “good bread”).

4. Famous Hamburger is serving halal burgers in Astoria

Few foods are more American than burgers, shakes, and fries; in the last few years, burger joints have popped up all over Western Queens, to the delight of meat lovers in Astoria and LIC. However, those who eat strictly halal have missed out, since the meat at the local burger joints does not meet halal standards. Well, now Muslims can fully partake in the local burger craze at the new halal restaurant, Famous Hamburger in Astoria.

3. What you can buy in Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, Westchester, and Dutchess for $250K

We did a little poking around to see what we could find for $250K around the region. In Queens, we’ve included a traditional 2 bedroom in Forest Hills. For $1K more in Manhattan the apartment is a cozy 130 square foot studio. In Brooklyn, its also a studio, but of course a bit larger. Moving up to Westchester, we’ve got a two bedroom, and up in Dutchess we’ve included a log cabin with 5 acres. Yes, the range here is 130 square feet to 5 acres.

2. What will $5.1 million get you in Queens? A sweet beach house in the Rockaways

NYC woke up this morning to the news that the most expensive house in Queens was sold – a home on the south tip of Beach 146th Street in Neponsit on the Rockaway Peninsula (GMAP). Neponsit is not far from Jacob Riis Park and Fort Tilden, two amazing green spaces in the area. The house itself sold for a total of $5.1 million, which was actually $1.1 million less than the asking price, but $3.6 million more than they originally paid for it all the way back in 1998.

1. Good eats near the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria

The Museum of the Moving Image is a true gem in Astoria, showing films old and new, classics and contemporary, international and domestic. A membership to MOMI is one of the best deals in the city – $75 for the year gets you unlimited free admission to all regular screenings, as well as the museum itself. It’s 100% tax-deductible, too. MOMI is also near a number of restaurants, many providing good eats for hungry bellies – who doesn’t like to grab a bite to eat while discussing the film they just saw?  We’ve highlighted four particularly awesome spots within a short walk from the theater.
