Astoria residents hope to turn the underutilized, rundown I.S. 126 schoolyard on 21st Street into a park, reports DNAinfo. Michael Bloomberg’s PlaNYC Schoolyards to Playgrounds initiative, which transforms schoolyards into public parks, selected the space long ago but funding fell through in 2011. Park advocates envisioned a plan that includes a track and synthetic turf field, a learning garden and basketball courts. I.S. 126 students would use the space during the day, then it would open as a public park after school and on weekends. If funding becomes available (it’s estimated the project will cost around $110,000) it’s possible the Parks Department will still renovate the space under the Schoolyards to Playgrounds program.
