School of American Ballet
The School of American Ballet was established in 1934 by legendary choreographer George Balanchine and philanthropist Lincoln Kirstein with the intention of creating a world-renown classical ballet company in the United States. Mission completed. Today, SAB is the official training academy of the New York City Ballet, training more students who go on to become professional dancers than any other school. On February 24, this Lincoln Center-based troupe will teach ballet at the Queens Theatre in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park. Participants, age four and up, will learn how to dance on their toes, spin in place without getting dizzy and other secrets of the trade. An SAB faculty member and advanced male and female students will teach and provide alternating examples of advanced classroom training exercises with the performance of excerpts from such classics as The Nutcracker and The Sleeping Beauty.
