How the Victorians Kept It Cool Inside During a Brooklyn Summer

Thank you for this article. It put so many things together for me. I grew up in Brooklyn in the 50s and 60s. My grandmother (born 1902) lived with us and she often spoke about working at Kayser before she married. She started straight out of high school working in a scissor factory and changed to Kayser, in response to an ad much like the one in the article, I imagine. She used to say the one place she wouldn't work was the lace factory because the lighting was bad and the close work had ruined the eyes of some of her friends. She worked there until she got married, coincidentally 100 years ago today, the day I saw this article!
