Video: A Taste of Bed Stuy
For those of you who haven’t gotten a chance to get to know Bed Stuy, check out this video that celebrates the nabe’s close-knit sense of community and architectural history and examines some of the issues surrounding the recent gentrification in the neighborhood. Our favorite part? A look inside the Akwaaba Inn on MacDonough Street….

A Taste of Bed Stuy [YouTube]
too short, but nicely done.
re. the ex-drug dealer: g, i don’t think he necessarily meant it like that. i think he meant it more like, when the white people move into the neighborhood police patrols and sweeps are stepped up and you’re assuming a much greater risk by selling on the block.
also, re. the rap or “crap,” as you call it: this particular music is especially significant as relates to the video. all of the music played is by artists (Mos Def,B.I.G.) who were born and raised in Bedford-Stuyvesant and reference the neighborhood prominently in their lyrics. Jay-Z is also born and raised in Bed Stuy. you don’t have to like it, but you didn’t understand the context.
They should have play some jazz to acompany such beautiful architecture. Aren’t black people playing that anymore?
Rap music sucks my ass!
I thought the music was really good, if you listen to the rhyme it is about bedsty. The comment from the exdrug dealer demenstrates why he was a drug dealer. If bed sty want to remain a black/african enclave. It needs more black/african owned businesses. (who don’t sell out)
What a great video.
The negroes listen to that “rap-music-crap”? In Bedford Stuyvesant no less. Oh, the humanity.
I am a hip hop fan (and I am black). Rebby, I would like to know what music you believe should be the soundtrack to a piece on Bed Stuy? A little Moby, some Brahms perhaps, or maybe a nice ditty from Clay Aiken.
Do or die brought us Biggie, Jay-Z, Mos Def, Fabolous the list goes on. My suggestion to you is to download any album by Black Star, Mos Def or Talib Kweli and with an open mind (probably asking too much given your post), listen to the lyrics for a month or two and get back to us. You my friend are an ignorant ass.
But the you tube piece was nice. Have a good weekend everyone!
If they played Rock and Roll in the video, now that would be crap. The You Tube video played a song by Mos Def, honoring Bklyn, who grew up in Bed Stuy.
Stunning architecture….Not too cities in the US can compete with that. I honestly do see Brooklyn competing with Manhattan in the future. Of course not for the high profile jobs but for the livability. Exciting times…
Not a rap fan myself (and i am black) but people have been calling it crap for year and it is still with us. If Bud’s announcement yesterday that Jay-Z is its newest “executive” is any indication, rap will be with us for a while — get used to it.
