For those of you who haven’t gotten a chance to get to know Bed Stuy, check out this video that celebrates the nabe’s close-knit sense of community and architectural history and examines some of the issues surrounding the recent gentrification in the neighborhood. Our favorite part? A look inside the Akwaaba Inn on MacDonough Street. Brownstone-y goodness.

  1. Well I am White and I was thinking of buying a beautiful townhouse in Bed-Stuy. Now I am not sure. It sounds like people want to keep it all black in that video. Not to welcoming to diversity.

  2. I am a Black man and I live in Bed Stuy and I hate rap music. That is why Black man act like that. They don’t have no respect for themselves and others. This video is great and the way they show how the black man act in Bed Stuy is 90% true. Sad to say it but is true.

More power to the Black woman!

  3. Yes I totally agree with you CrownHeightsProud. I am also a Black female and I am sad to see the Black man in the video portrayed as thugs and the such. Well the Rap music doesn’t help neihter.

At the same time it is interesting how they show Black women running the whole show in Bed Stuy.

  4. Everyone has a perspective. While many parts of this video would not be my perspective of BedStuy, I have to give credit where credit is due, it wasn’t a bad film. I personally don’t like rap that much, but I understand the context in which it was used here, and it was fine. If I did a film, I would have added more jazz, and some world music, but this is not my movie.

My only real problem with the film was that the only positive and intelligent role models were black women. As a black woman, I think that’s cool, but doesn’t reflect well on the many busy and prosperous black men who have contributed so much to the community.
The black men here were very busy doing the thug walk down the street and hanging out meeting and greeting, but the women were running businesses and giving tours. I don’t think that was necessarily intentional, but that jumped out more to me than anything else. Again, this is one or two people’s view of BS, and good on them for taking the effort, and showing the community positively.

  5. I am a fan of Rap! But I think that if they are trying to attract more Blacks to this neighborhood then they should not have played that bad rap song.

Maybe if playing a better rap song, then Rebby would not think it was ‘rap-music-crap.’
