The Times has an in-depth investigation into a rumor posted on Fucked in Park Slope last week about how some members of the Park Slope Food Co-op have their nannies working their shifts. So does it happen, and is it kosher? “‘As much as people think we are Big Brother and watch people, we don’t know these things,’ [Ann Herpel, the co-op’s general coordinator] said when asked how big the problem was. ‘But I don’t think it is one of our major problems.’ She said the most likely situation is one in which a nanny is a member of the co-op in her own right and agrees to work her employer’s shift, and therefore would not be easily detected.” We may never know.
I know its an old topic, but my two cents on the coop. My cousins live on a kibbutz in Israel. The cooperative basis presumes that a member, if elected, agrees to be an equal contributing member of the Kibbutz. They are given housing, food, living stipend etc. in return for a commitment to work and be a part of the community. The idea of someone wishing to join the kibbutz and reap its benefits, but instead of working alongside everyone else, pay $$ for such benefits (or pay someone else to do the work for them) is an anethema to the entire basis behind the kibbutz philosophy. Some kibbutzim have actually moved in this direction, and hire outside labor to work in their industries and permit residents to work outside of the kibbutz. But, as my cousin tells me, these kibbutzim are becoming no different than planned suburban communities like you see anywhere in the world, and lose the familial communal bond traditional kibbutzim offer.
So, the slope coop managers may be pains in the ass, and it may be a pain to do the shifts, but its important to maintain those rules to ensure the original intent of the coop. Of course, the coop can do, as other coops do, and basically have a two-tier pricing structure, where you simply pay more money if you are not a member (who would be required to fulfill their membership duties).
Urban Dictionary says Moonface can mean a lot of things. It references people smoking weed, or fat people, or Japanese People.. So, I don’t really understand why someone is taking offense by the term. That is unless you are a fat Japanese Stoner.. And if you are, I doubt you would really care that much..
Does “yellow bellied” only apply to Asians or “black-hearted” only apply to Africans?
If (for example) you were referring to people who live in Flushing or people who live in East New York, then more or less = YES
fsrq – no offense but – fuck you.
I have been reading rob’s rants about moonfaces for months. He has made various explanations multiple times.
As I pointed out it the term primarily applies to people of a certain race, but it is not only about race.
Does “yellow bellied” only apply to Asians or “black-hearted” only apply to Africans?
BHS – no offense but – are you slow? You think a term that combines the MOON (a big white orb in the sky) and face, is more about age, social status and attitude than about race????
The whole thing is a joke anyway – if this story is true (and I have my doubts since FIPS is the blog equivalent of *rob*) It shows how ridiculous the work requirement is and it would make these nannies the highest paid grocery store workers in history.
DIBS I think you miss the point I was trying to make -> even if your not “offended” such terms really are unnecessary and distasteful if used across the board.
this is obviously an enforcement problem, and clearly the co-op needs to budget more resources to regulation, rule-making and compliance. when i sign up for the co-op, i’m going to volunteer to be on the undercover workshift fraud team. violators will be punished by having to walk back and forth in the PPW bike lane in front of senator schumer’s house wearing an orange vest pushing a mini-cart with one hand and a bicycle in the other.
I’ll defer to Rob for a full explanation of moonface, but it seems to be more about age, social status, background, and attitude than race, although most people who fit the other qualifications will be of a certain race.
