The New York Times Tackles Nannygate at the Slope Food Co-op...

The Times has an in-depth investigation into a rumor posted on Fucked in Park Slope last week about how some members of the Park Slope Food Co-op have their nannies working their shifts. So does it happen, and is it kosher? “‘As much as people think we are Big Brother and watch people, we don’t know these things,’ [Ann Herpel, the co-op’s general coordinator] said when asked how big the problem was. ‘But I don’t think it is one of our major problems.’ She said the most likely situation is one in which a nanny is a member of the co-op in her own right and agrees to work her employer’s shift, and therefore would not be easily detected.” We may never know.
The editorial vision of the NY Times has long since been indecipherable. Still a pretty good paper but it’s all over the place. Aspirants in journalism seeking glory there, I shudder.
I read something amusing the other week; “Most people know how you become a famous sports star, but how do you become editor of the New Yorker?”
“the new york times doesnt hire real writers or journalists anymore.”
just. plain. wrong.
here is nicholas kristof’s latest op ed piece

yeah, “they basically take free stories from shitty writers who have a tendency to just write about themselves and their immediate neighborhoods they live in”
do you ever listen to the things you say rob?
Some members are more equal than others.
i think mr b should put a ban on the use of the word M#*nface. it is offensive and racist. What if people went around here calling people hood rats (i can think of much worse but i am not going there) every time there was a bed stuy or crown heights post? what if someone started using the word Hebe or K#%* in every williamsburg post involving the orthodox? would they get away with that? no. but for some reason Rob is allowed to run around here spilling ignorance and hatred wherever he pleases.
there is a fine line and i think it has been crossed. please stop.
OY.
A large part of the NY Times writing staff lives in Park Slope and surrounding areas, so that’s what they cover.
In 10 years when they get priced out of there I expect all the articles to be about Bed-Stuy and ENY.

While it’s amusing, don’t they have better things to report on? Who’s pulling the strings on this…a senior editor who was drummed out of the Co-op?

*rob*
I’m always surprised at how the NYT reports on the antics of one little organization (in the main section, no less) at least once a year. While it’s amusing, don’t they have better things to report on? Who’s pulling the strings on this…a senior editor who was drummed out of the Co-op?
Why be surprised? The work requirement serves no purpose other than making some members feel politically righteous. There’s no reason you shouldn’t be able to pay to join instead of working a shift or pay someone else to work your shift other than that there a bunch of folks who just don’t want it that way.
