The Times has an in-depth investigation into a rumor posted on Fucked in Park Slope last week about how some members of the Park Slope Food Co-op have their nannies working their shifts. So does it happen, and is it kosher? “‘As much as people think we are Big Brother and watch people, we don’t know these things,’ [Ann Herpel, the co-op’s general coordinator] said when asked how big the problem was. ‘But I don’t think it is one of our major problems.’ She said the most likely situation is one in which a nanny is a member of the co-op in her own right and agrees to work her employer’s shift, and therefore would not be easily detected.” We may never know.
ahh, but the nanny can relay the lesson to you, after she does your laundry..
“Seemed like a win-win situation all around, and I really don’t see anything elitist about it.â€
Shouldn’t those who have money to shop elsewhere give up slots to those who cannot afford traditional grocery prices? By having your nanny in there you’ve missing the point of doing the work that goes along with receiving the benefit.
omg i want to be an au pair!! how do you get into that?
*rob*
Seriously speaking, isnt the Nanny or House Keeper or Au Pair in most cases responsible for the feeding of the children? Doesnt the House Keeper normally do the food shopping for the family, doesnt the house keeper or nanny normally eat meals at the employers house.. It’s a grey area here if the Nanny or House Keeper is responsible for the shopping then, he or she should be responsible for working at the Co-op and getting the family a membership..
True enough, BHS, regarding the vast majority of the members of the PSFC. But the leadership is made up of old-school, 1960s-type, smash-capitalism-power-to-the-people types. Not that there’s anything wrong with that….
A kibbutz IS a coop. They are the same thing.

Oh that makes sense, The Park Slope Food Co-Op is the same exact thing as a Kibbutz in Israel.
The term “au pair” comes from a French term meaning “on a par” or “equal to,” and is used for live-in nannies who are treated like a member of the family (rather than as a domestic), much like a foreign exchange student. Ours was a hot French 25-year-old … a young adult who had never had the means to study abroad, so this was her way to have that type of experience.
“The Co-op consists of people with values that fly directly in the face of capitalism.”
I don’t think I agree with that. It might be made up of people with dreams of not being a part of capitalism, but from the members I know co-op members tend to be fairly successful capitalists.
au pair = hot swedish 18-year old…
