A reader sent in the photo at top yesterday, noting the following: “A bird’s eye view of the new foundation for the Flatbush Ave sculpture. Just poured last week. Trees are being planted a block away.” The sculpture in question, rendered below the photo, is part of the $23 million project dedicated to revamping the stretch of Flatbush leading up to the Manhattan Bridge. The work, which will go in the median just south of Tillary Street, depicts Miss Brooklyn and Miss Manhattan rotating 25 feet above the street. Other upgrades coming to the thoroughfare include new trees, benches and lighting.

  1. And it’s taken over a year just to get to the 50% finished part. And remember all the residents and businesses are paying a big BID tax to get this level of service. Joe Chan should be explaining what the heck happened. How does the gardening service take THIS long to plant some bushes.

  2. 23 Million for pavement, curbstones and lousy trees. The vintage 1940’s traffic design is included free, no extra cost.

Marty Markowitz must be getting a free Hot Tub full of cash out of this one.

  3. Additionally, would love to see MetroTech BID do something about the horrible parking all over the sidewalks by the 84th Pct. Between that and the gas station not having any beautification to it, it looks like you’re in a 3rd world capital.

  4. Tired of the overhype on this via Joe Chan. The improvements are great, but it’s taken over a year to plant shrubbery. The work in front of Toren is not even close to finished, and the scope of work had this going to Fulton, but for some reason it’s stopped at DeKalb. The sidewalk material used already looks like crap and they still haven’t touched the crosswalks. Someone is either incompetent or is taking a big payoff from this job.
