'The Real World' Opting for Downtown Brooklyn?
Those rumormongers over at the Times are perpetuating the (unconfirmed) gossip that the cast of “Real World: Brooklyn” will live in Downtown’s Belltel Lofts. The article has some excellent man-on-the-street quotes from people who live, work, or play near the building. It’s less safe, I feel, says 19-year-old Bruce Wallace. They could get mugged out…

They could get mugged out here. Wallace notes that the cast’s entertainment options in the area might be limited to stuff like catching a movie or going to Junior’s. (We think this is pretty short-sighted: After all, the Real Worlders would only be about eight blocks from the newish IHOP, and perhaps they’ll get to shop at the new H&M.) An employee of nearby Petland Discounts, meanwhile, has this to say: “Compared to other places they were living, I think this would be a downgrade. A few bars, a few stores, that’s about it. Clubs, they have to go to Manhattan. It’s kind of rough out here. They’ve just got to keep their eyes open and ears open. And a man who works at a religious goods store in the area thinks They’d be jeopardizing their safety. Too many side streets. At least one person sees only good from MTV setting up shop at BellTel: Ronn Torossian, a spokesman for the Bridge Street condo. We think this building will continue to gentrify Brooklyn, and certainly having MTV there will only accelerate that,” says Torossian. “We expect that it will increase property values. StreetEasy shows 17 active listings in the former telephone company building ranging from $517,000 to $1,899,000.

i think this is bad for brooklyn. i’m bummed. brownstone brooklyn would have offered charm and williamsburg would have offered interesting shopping and nightlife. this is blah…
I’ve been living at University Towers on the other side of Willoughby Street (across Flatbush)for 10 years and the idea that this area is unsafe is laughable. I walk along this block over to the 4/5 at Borough Hall twice a day (to and from work) everyday and there’s noting “unsafe” about it. Who exactly are these people that the author was talking to? Is it the nicest block in the world? Hardly, but it’s plenty safe. Hey, maybe MTV should pay FUREE to protect the Real Worlders!
10:47 Next time there happens to be an article or post about belltel lofts, do the other residents of the building a favor by zipping your lips!
Nobody cares about stay-at-homes and the few b&*ches are ruining it for all the other parents in the building who are pretty cool.
So, take your double wide, SUV stroller out of here!
There is a Dallas BBQ restaurant on Livingston Street.
they should do it. it will so much more real, especially the depiction of travel time to get to manhattan.
this is a silly rumor.
Being mugged? The precinct is very safe. There a lot of people in the nabe. I went to the IHOP last week…the food was not very good(I make better myself) but never felt unsafe-it was a fast cheap lunch. some people wouldn’t mine being in hell hole if it was in Manhattan but this block is far from gritty….except that it is Brooklyn.
“His wife is going to kick his ass when he gets home.”
If all she does is watch TV all day, then she won’t read the article and will never know the difference.
12:22 agree 100% this will be fun. But i can’t beleive the real world is still on TV. Why is MTV still on TV.
