Urban adventurer/photographer Nathan Kensinger, in a post dedicated to the late Bob Guskind of Gowanus Lounge, reveals the strange, and strangely beautiful, world that exists underneath the Coney Island boardwalk, from a small tent city to old building entrances. There are a bunch of photos to see, so check out the link.

  1. Pete…I can imagine that the C.I. whitefish are the same ones as also found under the deck of the Boatslip in Provincetown, MA!!!! What an incredible cruising area!!!!

  2. “I would walk onto the beach from Surf Avenue by passing underneath the boardwalk”

Wow….I forgot all about that until you mentioned it!

“From what I remember, it was probably a good idea to make it inaccessible….”

Yeah, that’s right also. No one was calling it “cool” then.

  3. I spent a lot of time under that boardwalk, in high school in the 80’s, before they trucked in the sand. From what I remember, it was probably a good idea to make it inaccessible….

  4. The boardwalk used to be elevated above the beach rather than the subterranean space it nows seems to be. Several years ago they trucked in tons of sand and raised the level of the beach, but as a kid I would walk onto the beach from Surf Avenue by passing underneath the boardwalk rather than over it as you now have to do.
