Bedford comes from the Dutch word Bestevaar. The Dutch West India Company acquired woodlands from the Kanarsee indians naming the township Bedford, the Anglicized form of the Dutch bestevaar which translated from the original native American name, means “council place”. This acquisition occurred around 1637-1645.
1:54, Bedford-Stuyvesant is not named for Bedford Avenue, it’s named for the two towns of Bedford and Stuyvesant Heights. The border is Classon, according to several sources online. That took me about 30 seconds to find out.
