The owner of Chez Oskar and Lola in Fort Greene, painter Charlotta Jansen, has bought the building at 373 Decatur Street in Bed Stuy and plans to turn the retail space into a restaurant.

An LLC bought the property from the longtime owner for $1,550,000 in July, public records show. The same month, the former owner filed an application with the building department to “renovate eating and drinking place. No change to use, egress or occupancy.”

Until a recent fire, Simplicity Wine Bar was housed in the extension at 310 Malcolm X. The restaurant will take up that space as well as the store currently occupied by the vintage clothing and antique store on the corner of Decatur and Malcolm X, Catcista’s and Thompson Interiors, according to two sources in the area familiar with the plans.

Jansen declined to comment on her plans for the space at this time, but the restaurant will present at the September meeting of Community Board 3 next week to ask for support for a liquor license, the CB agenda shows.

A casual fine dining restaurant serving New American or French food would be welcome here, from what local residents tell us. A great many eateries have opened in the area in the last seven months, including L’Antagoniste, Tepache Mexican Grill, Oaxaca Taqueria, MacDonough Cafe, Butch & CoCo, and Grandchamps.

  1. Great news it is. Love the food and vibe at Chez Oskar. Hopefully this new place has a similar feel. Also, very happy to see the continued churning of these storefronts on Malcolm.

Simplicity was nice and welcoming but definitely had more of a rugged vibe late night.

  2. Wow, this is such great news! As a former Ft. Greene resident and waiter at Chez Oskar back in 2001-2002, I am so glad to hear that Charlotta will be bringing her great, welcoming vibe, fun design sensibility, and tasty, well-priced food to the neighborhood I now call home. I wish the owners of Simplicity well in their next endeavor – hopefully they can rebound after the closing of Simplicity. And as a regular customer and fan of Catcista’s, I hope the owner finds a new retail space as close by as she can to the current location so that vintage fashion enthusiasts can still buy great clothes at her location! There’s plenty of empty spaces on Ralph Ave, just saying….
