Yesterday the Brooklyn Paper reported the MTA would spend $250,000 repainting the ceilings of the Jay Street subway entrance between Willoughby and Myrtle. One section closest to Willoughby Street has been painted and last Friday another section was blocked off to prevent the spread of lead dust. The ceiling directly above the subway entrance closer to Myrtle (pictured) hasn’t got the paint job yet, but everything should be done in two weeks.

  1. No, the biggest MTA disgrace in Brooklyn is the wierd netting (lead abatement?) applied to the concrete F/G train elevation at Smith-9th St. (best viewed from the Lowes parking lot). The netting hangs down and this temporary-permanent solution looks plain weird.

Is it supposed to be cemented over? Removed and repaired? What is this? Is it safe? Can it really keep lead particles from raining down on the sidewalks, playgrounds and SUV roofs of Carrol Gardens?

It’s entirely mysterious and probably super illegal.

  2. The biggest MTA disgrace in Brooklyn is the Borough Hall stop. The ceiling above the 4/5 is absolutely disgusting. Paint chipping off, brown & white ooze, mold, etc. Its horrific and really makes a really bad impression on travelers to Brooklyn (and people like me who use it every damn day).

  3. Wow.

It sounds like it’s gonna look just like our place when they’re done.

We paid a lot less though.

Maybe this is just a lead encapsulation coat and they’re going to skim coat next?

Plus maybe the $250 includes fixing the leaks?

    One can only hope.

  4. I walked by this paint job. The section they already painted looks like sh*t. Seems they just chipped off the worst sections that were already falling and painted right over the uneven surface. So it’s all one color now but all uneven too.

Again, the completed section looks like absolute sh*t.

Whoever did this should be embarrassed.

It seems like water will continue to leak through and this will look disgusting again by next spring.

MTA = Biggest joke in the country.

  5. But presumably this work IS sub-contracted out to a private firm. It’s when incompetent civil servants meet greedy contractors that you get to hear that loading sucking sound of taxpayer money going down the drain.
