Los Angeles-based artist and filmmaker Kahlil Joseph will be presenting a new, multimedia installation across different cultural institutions in Brooklyn.

“BLKNWS,” which will be on display at two locations at the Brooklyn Academy of Music as well as the Weeksville Heritage Center beginning March 23, is a reimagining of a contemporary news broadcast that uses “a plurality of editorial voices that approach reportage through a distinctly Black lens,” according to a press release. It was first shown at the Venice Biennale last year.

Over time the artwork will change, with the artist transmitting new segments to the piece from his studio. This means that every person who sees the work will have a unique viewing experience.

Joseph, known early in his career as a music video director (including the “Lemonade” project with Beyonce), has had his work exhibited at the Tate Modern in London and MoCa Los Angeles. In 2017, he had a solo exhibition at the New Museum in Manhattan. His pieces are video-based and often deal with black history and representation.

The project runs from March 23 through June 21 and will be free for all viewers. At BAM’s Peter Jay Sharp Building, the installation will be on view daily from noon to 10 p.m.; in the lobby of BAM Strong, it will show one hour before shows in the Harvey Theater. At Weeksville, the video will be on display Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., on Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, visit BAM’s website.
