crapperWhen we mentioned on the Renovation Blog that we were going to be installing Toto toilets, one reader had a particularly negative reaction, going as far as calling them “the worst kind of hype-y junk.” Now we consider ourselves open-minded and we don’t profess to have any special knowledge about this most necessary of all plumbing fixtures, so we thought we’d appeal to our benevolent readership. Plus, Apartment Therapy had the Smallest Apartment contest and Curbed is running a contest to rename neighborhoods, so we figured we’d have our own contest of a sort: Pick Brownstoner’s Throne. That’s right. Help us figure out the best crapper in the land for our hard earned dollars and win [insert cheap laugh here] our everlasting gratitude.

  1. Buy a Toto!

Years ago when toilets used more water for flushing most toilets worked great. However, few companies made the effort to reconfigure their toilets for less water when 1.6 GPF(gallons per flush) became the standard. Toto took the 1.6 GPF plunge and made a great toilet. look at http://www.performancetoilets.com if you can’t buy it wholesale from AF supply or some other. I often specify the “Carolina” model. Also the “Nexus” model is fantastic looking.

  2. kohler is overpriced and the arts they support are generally, well, bad, so don’t give them credit for that. totos are fine toilets and they come in a range of prices, but according to people in the know, they’re the best at any price point, and that’s what matters. i vote toto.

  3. I have installed 3 Toto toilets in my current apartment (2 Drake and 1 Carlyle). The service provided by Toto is excellent (I wanted to fix water level, and needed a part replaced) – instant real live customer support as opposed to Kohler. I had Kohler toilets before in our previous apt (also new) and I found that Kohler toilets tend to get plugged up much more. I only had occasion to use our plunger once or twice in our Toto toilets (mostly due to too much toilet paper). I would do Toto again but I would get it with the SanaGloss option. Have you looked into the Caroma toilets – they have a big flush for #2 and a little flush for #1 which seems quite a sensible idea to me.

  4. jk, you be talking about greywater recycling, you can use waste water from other stuff like washers and showers. but i imagine it would be a lot of work and money to set up. and i have shat in an incinerator toilet, can’t imagine it would be allowable in NYC. there are composting toilets too but again i don’t know if this would be legal here.
