crapperWhen we mentioned on the Renovation Blog that we were going to be installing Toto toilets, one reader had a particularly negative reaction, going as far as calling them “the worst kind of hype-y junk.” Now we consider ourselves open-minded and we don’t profess to have any special knowledge about this most necessary of all plumbing fixtures, so we thought we’d appeal to our benevolent readership. Plus, Apartment Therapy had the Smallest Apartment contest and Curbed is running a contest to rename neighborhoods, so we figured we’d have our own contest of a sort: Pick Brownstoner’s Throne. That’s right. Help us figure out the best crapper in the land for our hard earned dollars and win [insert cheap laugh here] our everlasting gratitude.

  1. I am a plumbing contractor that suggest toto toilets. They are the only way to go! I buy all my toilets from toilet warehouse because they have the very best pricing and it is at my door in less than a week. The last toilet I purchased was missing a flapper and that part was sent out that day.

  2. I spend alot of time in Japan where washlets are the norm. They are great. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Where can I get one in Brooklyn? Does it have to be installed by a pro?

  3. Jeeze, that washlet sounds like a toilet/sex-toy hybrid… “We cordially invite those who haven’t experienced the unprecedented level of pleasure one derives from the Washlet to visit…” and “For maximum comfort, your Washlet uses a streamlined wand that extends…” I mean, common! Where is the model that spanks all the dirty boys and girls behinds.

  4. I second the washlet recommendation. We got a Daelim bidet as a retro-fit on our toilet. You won’t go back. And hearing a guest say “I was a little intimidated to use your toilet, I thought one of the buttons might be an ‘eject'” is priceless.

  5. I have a toto and an american standard, and the toto is much better…never had to use a plunger! Also, they come in many looks & prices, as low as $300 (park slope plumbing .. 5 ave x 16 st). American Standard I do not recommend.
