There’s arguably nothing more iconic in the world of Brooklyn real estate than the brownstone. But the process of renovating and maintaining these architectural gems inevitably raises questions for a new owner or prospective buyer.

John Mazurek, a real estate agent and head of Douglas Elliman’s Mazurek Team, is hosting the third of six Brownstone Prep seminars, a series of discussions about all things Brooklyn brownstone that kicked off last fall. The third event of the six, entitled Brownstone Prep: A Renovation, will focus on how to repurpose a classic Brooklyn brownstone for modern living while saving as much original detail as possible.

The discussion will be headlined by Park Slope resident and architect Joe McGuier and his partner at JAM Architecture, Megan Conover. JAM is a Brooklyn-based architecture firm that focuses on renovation and restoration.

“We believe in keeping the best of what’s old, thoughtfully introducing the new and only starting over when you must,” is their renovation philosophy.

A few topics on the docket include how to prioritize items on the renovation list, distinguish between wants and needs, where to save money and what to invest in, and layouts for multi-families and single-families.

They will talk about how to put a bathroom on the parlor floor, what is involved in moving a kitchen, how to open up the parlor floor, finish a cellar, and deal with Landmarks.

Attendees are encouraged to come with questions.

Brownstone Prep: A Renovation will take place Wednesday April 5 at 7 p.m. at 267 6th Avenue in Park Slope. To learn more about the Brownstone Prep series or to RSVP to the event, check out the Brownstone Prep website.
