Big news on 70 Lefferts Place front: According to Council Member Letitia James, the Landmarks Preservation Commission has decided to “calendar” the property on this coming Tuesday for a public hearing. This is meaningful because once something’s on the calendar, no demolition permits may be issued. Stay tuned for details on the meeting.

  1. if people pay higher rent in one neighborhood, then landowners raise the rent in the property they own because they can compare it to other units in the area. it’s a inevitable. why do you think everyone left the LES / East Village for Brooklyn?

  2. I think from our discussion a month plus or so ago, we decided that the landmarking would create a huge financial mess for both buyer and seller, though many people who seemed to have information on the neighboring property thought that the buyer had no intention of condoing the site. In any case, I wonder if there is a way concerned people can figure out how to go about landmarking these kind of buildings before they are in the middle of the sales process. Is there any methodical way to find buildings (or streets) which should be landmarked but aren’t? I would feel better championing them before it became a financial disaster for some buyer.

  3. I’m really happy to hear this news. That house is on a lovely block that deserves to have its historic homes preserved. Nothing the developers would build on that site could replace the history and detail this home has going for it.

  4. 10:20 i got news for you, there would be no affordable rental units in this building, it was slated for condo’s, at a high price, which would have lead to high priced rentals. forcing all rentals in the area to go up even more than they are now. forcing you and anyone else from this area to relocate somewhere ‘cheaper’.

Also, Bloomberg will force your taxes up no matter what. Don’t believe the hype on this site. It’s NYC, you will be screwed with or without new units. Suck it up.

  5. I would prefer to see more apartments go up because the total property tax of the parcel would go way up and the newly constructed building would create a lot of new housing which would keep rental prices down for everyone.
