Canopies on Cambridge
Tuesday’s post about brownstone window awnings in Bed Stuy prompted one reader to send us this photo of Cambridge Place in Clinton Hill from 1928. It looks like these ones cover even more of the window. You’d really have to duck down to reach the front door. 1920s: Houdini, Flappers and Window Awnings? [Brownstoner]

Is that a brownstone on the left? And there are exterior shutters? Has anyone ever seen this? I have a bunch of big ole exterior shutters in my basement that I don’t know what to do with. Hmmm…
it looks so simple – like it should – because it doesn’t have the nasty garbage cans out front…Mr. B, I think you have a new cause to back here – enforce the laws and get the cans away from the fronts of homes
1928?? You sure this isn’t a 1939 tax photo? Those all have the block and lot sign in front like in this picture (some include a man in a hat as well-does anyone know who he is?).
Sorry for the double post, my first one sounded confusing. What a great picture.
its 51 Cambridge, there’s a couple of thumbnails on propertyshark, it now has this weird brick fence in the front yard.

brownstoner, you should set up a section so users can upload these old city photos. i love seeing what these houses used to look like, esp seeing the other stuff in the photos, like that gangstermobile above.
Cambridge place is a great street now, and it will not be affected by AY shadows.
Cambridge place is a great street now, and it will not (like 99% of Clinton Hill) be affected by AY shadows.
Yeah, I know it was right around the depression but seeing a picl ike that makes me wanna live during that time.
They must have taken down the awnings in anticipation of no longer needing them after AY is complete…what with the long shadows and all…
