Thought our Brooklyn was the only one? The borough of Brooklyn derives its name from the town of Breukelen in the Netherlands – there is even a plaque in the charming town center noting the connection.

While there appears to be only one Breukelen, the anglicized Brooklyn has scattered across the world. Some of the towns have no connection to the Dutch word but are indicative of geography (a brook) while others are in former Dutch colonies or were settled by Dutch immigrants or former New Yorkers.

In the U.S., there are more than 20 towns bearing the name Brooklyn. The number increases further if townships, lakes and even parks are included. We’ve gathered a sampling of photos for a virtual tour of Brooklyns around the world.
