213 Cumberland Slinks Back to LPC
Apparently someone blew the whistle on the owners of 213 Cumberland Street in Fort Greene for altering the fence around their brownstone. (The inset photo shows how the fence looked last year before the alterations.) The violation was particularly noticeable because of the property’s corner location across the street from the entrance to Fort Greene…

Apparently someone blew the whistle on the owners of 213 Cumberland Street in Fort Greene for altering the fence around their brownstone. (The inset photo shows how the fence looked last year before the alterations.) The violation was particularly noticeable because of the property’s corner location across the street from the entrance to Fort Greene Park. (According to LPC, the owners also put in some new windows without getting them approved first.) As a result, they’re going in front of LPC today to try to get retroactive approval. Frankly, we think this fence looks a little silly and is too prominent to let slide. We bet Olde Good Things has some old iron fencing in its warehouse that would look a lot better. Update: We just heard from LPC that the hearing on 213 Cumberland ended up getting laid over until next week.

11:36 has it right.
it has taken these guys well over 18 months to put up that fence. it was sitting half finished (the “before” photo) for almost a year before they painted it and added the top half. i always wondered why it took them so long to put that thing in. it seemed like it took them 6+ months just to get to the state you see in the “before” photo.
if i remember correctly, the original fence from many years ago was a seriously eroded cast iron fence that looked like a 50s or 60s cheap replacement for the original.
while the fence is an odd design, i think the owners did a pretty good job sprucing that corner lot up overall. i never even noticed the non-approved windows.
The What, Do the Opposite of what Biff said.
Are you kidding? It looks MUCH better now.
11:17 A.M. – Please share the background story on Olde Good Things. Thanks!
Guest February 26, 2008 11:57 AM is right on the money.
The What, did you wake up on the wrong side of the broomstick today? It’ll be okay. Relax, take a deep breath and slowly move away from any sharp objects and windows on high floors…
I would like see a cannon or two behind that fence.
The LPC is a bunch of fucking house nazi’s. Plus fuck the Asshat’s who rat on their Neighbors. Back in the day you fix your house and that was it. If you paint your door, there are fucking snitch sites (like this one) to call LPC. Fuck you LPC!!!!!
The What
Someday this war is gonna end…
Brownstoner is the area’s biggest snitch…..
brownstoner says: “The standard isn’t whether they made a marginal improvement; it’s that any improvement like this must be approved by LPC before it’s done.”
but you’re describing this homeowner as if they painted the house purple. when you say they “slink” back to LPC, the fence is too “silly” to let slide, etc., you’re suggesting they did something other than improve the appearance of their property. ok, they didn’t use the proper procedural channels, but does that seriously warrant a callout like this? i understand when you go off on scarano, illegal demolitions, and the like, but i don’t get it when you single out specific homeowners who are genuinely trying to improve their proprerty.
“THE FENCE HAS AN ADDITION”.
I think that says it all. Hilarious.
