Metal molding stripping
Looking to have steel doorframes, as well as a couple of riser pipes, stripped, polished, and coated in our Deco-era apartment on the Lower East Side. Can anyone recommend someone to do this? Also, does anyone have recommendations on a good way to seal stripped steel? Our previous contractor did a good job stripping and polishing the window casings, but the one in the bathroom has completely flash-rusted over the course of 3 months, while the other ones are rusted anywhere that an object has touched them. He used 3 coats of Krylon to coat it.

no, the one that popped up here on facebook or wherever was 169.00. now, here is the thing, it may be gimmicky at that price. and power hungry, yes but no more than the arc welder. i may buy it soon and will report back.

Steve, let me know what you come up with for a price on that laser stripping device. My understanding is that it is crazy expensive and very, very power hungry.

Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately I can’t remove the molding or window frames, they have to be stripping in place.
Does anyone have experience with De Gamba stripping? They are the only place that has replied with a quote so far.

ok, was just on facebook and it pushed an add up in front of me for a Laser that can be used to strip rust from metal. no chemicals, no mess. i am going to buy one. i was thinking about what dork said and was wondering who blasts in the city (unless they have a cabinet and i used to have a small one) as the sand ends up all over the place.

Take it to someone who can blast it and then a clear powder coat.

I just googled “clear coating steel” to see what came up as I have thought about polishing old steel hinges and bluing or putting a patina on them and clean coating them. someone said that there is a product made by PPG (Pittsburgh paint) that works. someone else said that acrylic poly works. I think what might be real important is to acid wash them first with an acid used in the automotive trades to be sure all of the rust, even the invisible rust, it gone. I would have thought clear krylon would have worked.
