HEIGHTS WOODWORKING CUSTOM WINDOWS
Three years ago we needed to replace 19 windows in our brownstone – took our time investigating options and, you’re right – it does get confusing! We went with Heights Woodworking and have no regrets. We looked into Marvin – found that they have plastic tracks whereas Heights uses metal weather stripping – far superior. As you said, Marvin uses a little thicker glass, but, since we wanted the windows to go with our house, we didn’t want to lose the molding – as the glass gets thinker, there’s no room for molding. Marvin windows have a modern look that we didn’t want. No cold air comes in our new windows. We love ‘em. Heights wasn’t the highest – nor the lowest – we chose them because we had 5 recommendations that we trusted. Our frames were in pretty good shape so Heights repaired and painted them and replaced the sashes. They did the job quickly, cleaned up after themselves, and we never had a concern with their guys working in our home. Hope this helps – good luck!

In follow up on my recent post inquiring about replacing landmark windows w/ Marvin or Kolbes, now considering replacing sashes only as I’m told the old frames are in good condition. I got a bid from Heights WW and they suggested sashes only while they could provide any necessary replacement of brickmoulding. He says with a good installer a sash replacement will work well and perform well thermally with either his custom windows (which can be oak instead of Marvin’s standard pine) The more I learn about these options the more confused I get! Questions 1) How is Heights WW as a window installer? How are their custom window sashes as opposed to Marvin’s sash replacements? His windows can be made with oak, but can not be clad on the ouside. His windows have a thinner glass unit than the Marvins. 2) Assuming my old brownstone frames are ok, are sash replacements (with good installer) the smart way to go to save money and an easier installation or is brick to brick the real way to go? Thanks again for helping in this confusing process!

Regarding your second question, YES, sash replacements are as good as a full replacement provided that THE INSTALLER IS GOOD and the existing casings are in good shape and DON’T LEAK any air infiltration. The key to truly efficient windows is 50% the window and 50% the installation. High energy efficient windows aren’t worth a dime if there is air infiltration around the casings and they are not properly insulated where, in the case of brownstones, the wood meets the brick. I just had some done (not here) and they are great. Used Marvins.
