We were lucky Arkady. My block association (Midwood II) filed it’s own applications and ended up doing much better than the blocks that filed through the Lefferts Manor Assoc. I even got a tree guard around the huge silver maple in front of my house that had to come down the following fall because it was hollow and dangerous [and “my” new honey locust, planted last fall through the tree trust seems to be doing well in that big tree pit].

The City also sometimes installs tree guards for free. Almost my entire block got them a few years ago, through the Borough President’s Office. However, I think the funding for this may have dried up.

Yes, Bob, it is a requirement. And there’re others: one is that it not be flush w/ the sidewalk so it can capture rain runoff. The forms for the permit are very complicated which is another reason to go w/ the Trust.

I think it’s tax deductible because you don’t own the tree guard, which is on a City sidewalk. I had a tree planted by the Tree Trust, which is the same deal. I wouldn’t have owned that tree even if I had it planted by a private arborist. BTW a tree guard should be three-sided so that car doors don’t hit it. That might actually be a requirement.

Dean – Gift horses & mouths. I have no idea how it works but you can Google Tree Trust to get details. It’s part of the City Parks Dept. so there’s no scam involved. I organized a bunch of my neighbors & about half a dozen of us got them through the Trust.

How can this be tax deductible when you are getting something in return (eg the same way the IRS is clamping down on concert tickets in return for donations). This being said we used these guys and were happy with the work EXCEPT that the original quote was only 3 sides rather than 4 sides (apparently its “optional” just wasn’t explained to us at the time).
