Tree limb down: what to do now?

We just closed on our first home, in Park Slope. We came home tonight to find that a huge branch fell off the top of the tree in front of our house (on our property). It landed on a neighbor’s yard and the sidewalk, blocking the whole walk, but luckily spared people, cars, etc. The neighbor called 311, but I’ve heard that the city bills you for any work they do, and that it’s expensive. Will the city handle this? If they will bill us, would I be better off calling a private service before the city gets here? Any info appreciated. Thanks.

I believe it would be similar to the aftermath of the tornado last year when Parks got rid of all the debris for free if the branches were lying on city property & partly on private.
