Sidewalk violation in LPC district

A friend of mine is having similar work done by Park Slope Brownstone & VinRoy, the owner of PSB, is applying for the permits. Not sure how long it takes.

Hi, I am the “lucky” recipient of a DOT sidewalk violation for having an uneven sidewalk. Finding a DOT approved contractor to fix the sidewalk is not a problem. However, the contractor told me to first get LPC approval. On reading the LPC guidelines, it appears I need a sign-off from a licensed architect or engineer. This sounds complete overkill for a sidewalk color patch job. I am wondering if anyone else has been through the LPC process for a minor sidewalk repair and did not require/submit a letter from an architect/engineer. Many thanks

I applied to Landmarks in June last year for a sidewalk repair. In addition to the application form they wanted drawings with measurements of before and after plus multiple photos in hard copy. Everything they needed was provided and I even met with them at their offices to discuss before starting the application (no mention of architect at any time). They confirmed receipt of my documents and then………….nothing. I called and emailed my contact many times. She never answered the phone, never responded to voicemail and never answered the emails. I emailed the LPC general email address asking for help and no response. I phoned the LPC helpline, nobody answered. After several months I stopped. You can see why so many people repair their sidewalk without a permit. Especially when there is a health and safety issue.

If yours is a 1-, 2-, or 3-family building, there’s a good chance you qualify for the city to make the repair and send you the bill. That’s usually the better way to go. Cost is virtually the same, but the burden falls to the city’s contractors to meet requirements, including historic district.
