Sidewalk concrete cured time

It depends on the mix of aggregate to cement and water.  You need to know that some concrete is “hotter” than others and will cure more quickly.  Concrete cures by the heat emitted when the minerals bond after being activated by water – and literally gives off heat as it cures.  I’ve been on a lot of winter pours on heavy civil jobs, and we would use blankets to cover slabs and walls and so forth.  Keeping curing concrete warm and damp also helps the surface cure for the first few days, so if rain is not in the immediate forecast, throw a bucket of water on it after the surface has cured enough not to be damaged. Older concrete is much harder than newer, and after about 100 years it starts to break down.

We are in the process of replacing the concrete in our sidewalk and driveway. One of the contractors said that it takes 1 yr for the concrete to cured 100%, during this time..any salting on the concrete can damage the concrete. It is a bit hard to believe since NYC always get a decent amount of snowfall. I’m comtemplating now if I should redo my sidewalk/driveway after the winter season instead. Please advise. Thanks

i’ve been told 2 years when ours were poured.  shovel and sand is prudent for the first year.

There are non-salt-based snow-melt substances that are supposed to be better for the environment, easier on dogs’ feet and your concrete, available in most grocery stores.

After 7 days, concrete attains approximately 2/3 of its design strength and after 28 days approximately 100%. though it will continue to cure indefinitely. Pour the sidewalk at least 4 weeks before the first frost. Stay away from rock salt. Ed Kopel Architects
