ISO: Advice on Sidewalk Replacement/Quality
Thanks gang…great insights from everyone. It’s about a year ago (reluctant to admit that — I’ve been chasing him for a few months off and on…). He actually came by the day I posted, and YES, did try to get me to just go along with it, while also admitting that there must have been too much water in the mix, and that it wasn’t groomed properly. It wasn’t kept wet or covered during curing either. He’s getting back to me on redoing it.

I had my sidewalk replaced several months ago and I believe the work was inferior because there’s some surface spalling/erosion on the surface. Before making a stink with the contractor, I wanted to confirm that this isn’t ordinary settling or anything. I’ve done a lot of home projects, but this is my first sidewalk! Three photos are attached…2-3 flags have been affected. Thanks to the forum in advance!!

looks like salt could be the culprit.

Thanks…I can attest that we only use the snow melt that’s the white pellets, safe for concrete. That shouldn’t create any damage, right?

i don’t think salt can do that. did you contractor break up the old sidewalk entirely?

He did…and did a cement pour from the truck. He came today and said it happens, and is acceptable, but it was probably that the grooming wasn’t smooth and water has permeated.

Something wrong there. was it a very hot or windy day?..maybe the water evaporated too quickly or it was overworked or just lousy concrete/last delivery on the truck. concrete should be covered to cure properly and or misted with water. There are repair products that skim coat to concrete. maybe he will do that for a small charge or free. http://nyc-dob.com

ps. once the lousy work is in place..that’s when the contractor’s mouth goes full gear to justify not redoing it. Do not accept any excuses.

When exactly was the work done? What was the temperature that day? In the days and weeks after, how did the temperature change? Hydration: After the first day, was the surface kept wet? I realize not everybody pours concrete only during optimal temperatures and with sufficient hydration, but when it is really important, like on the BQE (best maintained street in the world), they do. Was your contractor licensed by the DCA? What guarantee did they provide?

lack of water would lead to cracking, not this – correct? my understanding is that spalling on new pours can be from excess water (rain or the mix itself) and over finishing.

A family member had the same thing happen to them. When I confronted the contractor, Manny, he said it was from salt. I called his bullshit and asked him how the 3 foot width of driveway that he poured the day before was fine yet the 3 feet abutting it was spalled he kept claiming salt was the problem and we should sue him if we wanted it fixed. He claimed that the strength was fine, which I don’t disagree with. I’m sure it is good 4000# concrete, it’s just that he finished it too quickly and didn’t keep it wet during curing. Gimme a break… We are going to court.
