Water and Sewer Line Repair

Got a mailing today from the NYC Environmental Protection for AWRUSA protection coverage for water and sewer line repairs ($12.96 per month). The list, however, of “Repairs Not Covered” leads me to believe they would find a way NOT to cover anything. Has anyone used this insurance/ American Water and had them successfully repair?

Wouldn’t a typical homeowners policy cover something like this?

I had insurance—water main broke on a property New Year’s Eve Day–DEP gave me a 3 Day Notice Called American–plumber called 7PM New Year’s Eve–had already been to location. Repaired it Sat. Jan 2–Insurance covered the cost. Told a $7700 retail bill if not covered–water interconnect was across the street–had to go full distance. I had to replace a sewer line in Park Slope 5 yrs. ago before insurance available. Cost me $7200 then. Take the insurance.

I also did not subscribe for the reasons PSM and snowman describe. We put in a new water and sewer line when we renovated, so I am not so worried about age. First time we received the flyer, I called to ask exactly what was and was not covered. Specifically, I wanted to know whether damage from tree roots was covered or excluded. No one could tell me. I took that as a bad sign that they would look for any way to disclaim coverage.

I did not have the insurance. Broke my water pipe cleaning my basement. Was told by repair company that it would’ve been covered by insurance. I guess they could’ve been lying, but why? They said they had done numerous repairs and be reimbursed by program. I signed up for the sewer side of it (since I’d just installed a brand new incoming pipe…)

My neighbor had a broken sewage line, they came and they fixed it with a crew. They did a good job and he was covered fully.

I fell for the mailer and wasted several months of payments on this awr insurance. After 7 months of payments I called one time when they identified a broken pipe. I was told that they will not cover the broken pipe due to “pre existing conditions”. I read about others having this problem with the insurance but never thought it would be me. Since then I have investigated and heard this is a commons occurrence. I ended up hiring a private company from Brooklyn for the sewer repair which went very smooth.

I have not and I would not buy it for exactly the reason you identified. I get them regularly. It also offends me – seems like it should be illegal – for the private company to be selling insurance with the blessing of NYC Environmental Protection and the appearance that it is a government program. It’s an insurance ad, just like all the other junk mail you get. Beware.
