Drywell Experiences

Hello, I was wondering if anyone in the community has installed a drywell in their brownstone backyard to handle the roof runoff to prevent it from entering the house drain and flooding.  All of our issues with basement water seem to come from heavy days that overload the street sewer, which nearly most of our neighbors experience.     I would really be interested in hearing anecdotal stories from anyone who has done this.

What framehouse describes is also known as a french drain or soak-away.  I have the same thing in my garden & it works wonderfully – not a drop in the basement in the 15 years since I had it done.

I did not have basement flooding, but did have flooding in the backyard and patio area that may have been contributing to flooding problems in my neighbor’s basement. I contracted with Anthony Bauer (Anthony the Mason, 347 307 4725) to install drainage and a bluestone patio. He dug a big pit in the backyard and filled it with gravel. PVC piping connected drains in the patio to this pit. The patio was pitched so that runoff flowed into the drains and thus into the big pit. He did a very nice job on the patio and the drainage works great. It easily handled all of the water from last week’s rainstorm. I would definitely recommend Anthony for a project like this.
