Advice Needed: Street Access and Sewer Line replacement July 21

Ask the water main company to post signs and leave a barricade out in front. That will clear out the people who have nice cars and don’t want them damaged. For the rest well these companies are used to working in busy traffic and they do what ever it takes to get the job done. You should be worried about the mess that can happen in your basement. They use jack hammers and compressed air to blow a hole through your foundation. Make sure you have dust control measures in place.

We live out of state and have hired a sewer company to replace our sewer line and water main next week. Just learned we need to provide 2 parking spaces worth of access immediately in front of our house for 8:30am arrival on Monday, July 21 so heavy duty truck can park there. Neighbors are out of town and tenants do not have cars. Does anyone out there have a suggestion for us? Street cleaning is on Thursdays on our block… Many thanks!

If you live out of State, this is not going to be the only situation that you need a local agent to take care of things for you, your tenants are going to get mighty tired very quickly of “doing your job”. Contract a local maintenance manager to take care of these issues; for a monthly retainer you will have peace of mind and your tenants will have someone to call in case of an emergency. You will also need someone to clean up after the sewer and water main have been replaced, both inside and out. The contractors only broom sweep clean and that is if you are lucky. I have seen major messes left behind such jobs.

I will be there through out the sewer line replacement project. Just looking for some help with the parking access requirement for the truck since we, like many people in Brooklyn, do not have a car to block the space in advance.

Garbage cans & 2 x 4 barricades. Fill the garbage cans so that they are not easily moved; except by your plumbers in the morning! Happy Sunday, waiting for Monday morning….

Our street usually is pretty barren of cars on summer weekends. I’d suggest you start putting up barriers on Saturday. Hang out on the stoop & ask anyone who moves into the spot to please go elsewhere – saying why you are doing so. It might help to put up signs asking for cooperation.

On my block, trash cans or barricades would never last a full day, let alone a full weekend. Try to reschedule so that the work is done the same day as alternate side, or one day after alternate side. Even best friends are unlikely to store their car in front of your house for 4 days. If better appt. schedule one day after alternate side, and still no car to block the space, rent a car.

I had my water main done a few years ago. The plumbing company advised me to “try to have the street clear” but I was new to the neighborhood and didn’t know how to begin. So of course there was a car right in front of my house when they came to do the job. Within ten minutes, the guys from the water main company got some wheeled jacks out from their truck, hoisted the car onto the casters and wheeled the bad boy away from the curb and double parked it across the street! I was partly amused and partly horrified. The job took most of the day at the end of which they patched the hole, swept the street, moved the car back to the spot and took it down off the jacks. It’s possible the car owner was none the wiser. Or perhaps s/he thought “Huh… I don’t remember all this mess when I parked this morning…”
