Bed Stuy/Crown Heights schools

Do I have a preference for either Crown Heights or Bed Stuy in general? Well, I live in Bed Stuy, so that is the neighborhood I know best. It’s very friendly and I like the style of the houses. One possible advantage of Crown Heights is that you have the children’s museum and it is closer to Prospect Park.

we are thinking about moving from manhattan to one of these areas. what are the public schools like? we know there is an influx of families to these areas, so where is everyone sending their kids to school? we have a 2 year old and need to know about pre-schools, as well as schools, and how the whole schooling process works. thanks!!

Since no one is answering, I will just say there are a ton of daycare centers in both these communities. Most are located on the garden floor of houses. They are quite reasonably priced. The downside is that few have much space and most take older (school age) children as part of after school programs. In our experience, the ages don’t mix well, and so we moved our then six-month-old to a similar day care in a house in Clinton Hill that has only babies and toddlers. As for preschools, there is a Montessori school in Stuyvesant Heights. There are a couple of private elementary schools in Bed Stuy. That’s all I know.

We send our two year old to Stuyvesant Montessori and he likes it very well. The director of the school encourages parents to consider private school. There is a annual Private School Admissions Fair held in Stuyvesant Hts. that the director encourages parents to attend to see representatives from private schools in Brooklyn and Manhattan.
