which school is better p.s. 9 or p.s. 11?
i’m a single mom having livingn in prospect heights and am having trouble deciding which school to send my son to. p.s. 9 is closer to home but only goes up to grade 5 and there doesn’t seem to be any male teachers. p.s. 11 has a boys to men club for grades 3-5 and instills great values in their children. uniforms are also mandatory at p.s. 11\. the cons to p.s. 11 is the commute and there is no on-site afterschool care until 6:00 like p.s. 9\. your thoughts?

PS 9 does have an affordable after school care program that’s run by the PTA along with Kids Orbit.

That’s what I was afraid of…the possibility of the school not expanding within the next 6 years. So much to consider.

Pose the same question on FGKids – the yahoo group. Tons of people will chime in, especially on PS 11, plus there’s lots of info in the archives. You can subscribe by sending an email to fgkids-subscribe at yahoogroups.com

i don’t have kids in school yet, but i have considered this exact question. as far as i could tell, after doing a bit of research on test scores (for what they are worth), diversity, etc., ps9 and ps 11 are pretty interchangeable in terms of the likely quality of education your child will receive. so yes, it comes down to what is a good fit for your family. for me, i want school to be a key part of the fabric of our lives, but not to require us to completely rearrange our lives. and that means a school where we can most easily be a part of the school community is a priority for us – where we can visit classrooms with ease, go to PTA meetings, have easy playdates and extracurriculars located close to home, etc. it also means, for us, that our contributions to the school will be contributions to the community we live in, which hopefully will benefit our neighbors (and, in a way, ourselves) long after our kids move on. your priorities might be different, and i’m not saying that community-mindedness outweighs education, safety, etc. but those other things being roughly equal, i’d really consider how your community school might enhance your son’s daily experience.

Have you visited the schools in person? Many parents say that’s a critical step in finding out if the school is a good fit for your child. Different children need different things so another parent’s trade-offs in schools may not be a good fit for your child, and therefore their opinions may be not helpful or misleading. Though of course nothing wrong with asking for input. Best of luck.

I know some people will think this is wrong, as it my thinking may show support for the “teaching to the test” attitude that is so widely condemned, but when we were checking out schools, we went on the NYC Schools website and compared test scores for the two schools in the area. I think the website will also provide you with parental survey data, ie “how safe do you feel at your child’s school”, etc. Steve
