Moving a roof deck for roof replacement
My co-op in Prospect Heights needs a roof replacement, but we have a heavy wooden deck up there and no idea how to move it to allow access to the roof below. It’s built in modules, and so theoretically moveable, but each section probably weighs 700-900lbs. Five or six people could manage this, but it’s quite a load, and I want to make sure I’m handling this in the best, safest way possible. Surely this is a common problem for townhouses and brownstone owners—there are roof decks everywhere in this town—and yet all of the roofers I’ve contacted act as though having a roof deck in the way of a new roof is a unique problem. Does anyone have any advice or experience here?

Hire and pay for a professional who has workers compensation insurance – THAT represents your inquiry “want to make sure I’m handling this is the best safest way possible”.

If the deck is in that good of shape that it can be moved and reinstalled you should contact a rigging company, a roofer isn’t going to deal with this. Try United 718-726-6111 or Auers (212) 427-7800.
