I like randolph’s response better and would try it but it sounds like a waste of cheese.
Google “non toxic tracking powders”.
As it happens, i am taking my nys wood destroying insect test tomorrow as part of my home inspection business. I was given an example of a pesticide lable to interpret and it happen to be for a tracking powder (the toxic kind). We have mice issues here and they come and go with my use of mint oil. I would like to find out where they go so i can make their lives miserable there as well and i might get some tracking powder to watch their movements.
The mint oil works but we have to keep using it. Btw.

tie a string to a piece of cheese, wait until the mouse drags it away and then follow the string.

we had mice coming in a few years ago and we purchased 2 wyze cameras on amazon. at the time they were like 20 bucks a pop. we set them up in the areas where we would find droppings. and worked our way throughout the whole first floor. we were able to isolate them, find the point of entry. sealed it up, setup some traps and got rid of them. they havent been back since.

fwiw this year after years of hearing mice in my ceiling i sprayed the outdoor perimeter/foundation of house frequently with mint (esp facing street) and drilled a small hole in ceiling and threw some mint packets in there. *important* to do this before it gets too cold or they’ll already be looking to get in. so far no more sounds. fingers crossed.

Even if all the exterior walls are sealed, mice can enter through gaps in party walls and perhaps through joist pockets.

Highly recommend the services of District Rodent Authority, our exterminators for a 3 unit building for several years. Unlike other exterminators we’ve dealt with, their approach is centered around actually identifying and closing off points of entry for mice entering the living space. They are extremely professional and methodical, and competitively priced (especially when you consider that their approach actually works, not something I can say for other exterminators I’d used previously). Good luck! Mice are no fun.

A note: K, so what do you do when you DO encounter mice in your house?
Outside of owning a cat…if you have a streak of moral muscle in you like I do, soaking cotton balls in pure extract peppermint oil and placing them strategically, works. Mice back off.

Finding where mice are entering your house can be a bit tricky, but there are a few steps you can take to narrow down the search:
Look for signs of mice, such as droppings, chewed paper or fabric, and gnaw marks on wood or plastic surfaces. These can give you clues as to where the mice are most active.
Follow the scent of urine. Mice leave a trail of urine as they move around, so you may be able to detect the door coming from a particular area of your house.
Check for gaps and holes in walls, foundations, and roofs. Mice can enter your house through even the tiniest of openings, so it’s important to inspect your home thoroughly. Look for holes in baseboards, gaps around pipes and vents, and cracks in your foundation or walls.
one of the source check this
https://homeprofy.com/how-to-find-where-mice-are-coming-into-house/
Seal up any openings you find. Once you’ve identified areas where mice could be entering your home, it’s important to seal them up to preven t further infestations. Use caulk, foam sealant, or weather-stripping to fill gaps and cracks, and consider installing door sweeps to block entry points under doors

Our neighbors were doing a gut renovation and our tenants started noticing mouse droppings. We live in Harlem and called Kojo pest elimination who are in the Bronx. Damian came out and checked all the corners of the base board heating , pull out the stove and checked anywhere there may be a hole. He sealed every hole with a special concrete type mix. After he came there was never an issue with mice. I hope this helps

I think cate is right. The droppings are always the easiest tip off. And the grossest. The tend to like pet food too so keep that sealed up if you’ve got any. A little peppermint oil helps keep them out too if you don’t have pets it will affect.

Keep an eye out for droppings. Also look at holes whose edges are stained with the fifth of their fur. Listen for noise in the walls. A good exterminator who specializes in mice can also advise where they may be coming in, though no one will be as good at finding the spots as you will be since you live there. They can come via attached row houses next door, via plumbing and electrical conduit, around chimney areas and pocket doors, via the crown molding of a tin ceiling and in dropped ceilings, to name a few spots.

Get a female cat. Ours was female. They worker harder probably because they are worried about feeding the young. the males get lazy and complacent.

I have, all of whom are completely useless when it comes to mousing… the most aggressive one is highly competent at hunting socks every night, which he piles in the living room. Mice , on the other hand, he just watches…

Mice can nest in crawl spaces under the roof, inside the walls or between floors.. When we had mice they were entering through the old forced-air ducts. and returns not removed by our former contractor. We purchased stainless steel mesh to stuff into the ducts before sealing the walls. Mice can chew through aluminum but not steel. It seems to work. Some cats are good mousers, others just stare at them. But worth trying.
Good luck.

Even the presence of a tiny kitten seems to discourage mice. We’ve had four cats, over 50+ years, and only notice mice in those brief periods between kitties.

just so others know, you can foster cats. we had mice come in here last fall and i seem to have gotten rid of them by spraying some non toxic spray they do not like but really, i wonder if they just went to another part of the house. i had to keep putting the spray out. it would be cheaper to feed a foster cat for a month or two.

Get a cat. The cat will sit by the opening waiting for them. Ours did that until she passed away a year ago. We never had mice when she was here either. We have had problems since.
