Where/How to Buy a Treadmill in BK/NYC

Not your typical Brownstoner question I know, but you’d suspect with several million people concentrated into a few boroughs that there would be a bunch of storefronts and showrooms devoted to purchasing treadmills. I’m in the market for one and have been researching the issue for a while and unless these stores are horrible at promoting themselves, they don’t seem to exist in NYC. I should modify that because there is GymSource. Unfortunately GymSource seems to limit their treadmill selection to high-end models with high-end price tags ($2,000 to start) and from what I’ve determined online, there is an excellent and very large selection of treadmills available in the $1200-$2,000 range. The problem is finding a place to try them out which is universally recommended. I assume there are treadmill owners in the Brownstoner community. Where did you buy yours and/or where did you do a “test drive”? Thanks.

This is a very good one. Your story is just like mine as I also don’t like going to the gym so I tried to get a used gym equipment from this plug https://www.bestusedgymequipment.com/ and I’ve been using their product up till now. I get as much value as I would get if I’m using a new one. So no more stress!

Life Fitness in manhattan has models to try.  I don’t know the price range on treadmills there, so call first.  I got an elliptical there, but it was above your price range.  They were very easy to work with.  They also are somewhat flexible on pricing, so you can try to negotiate.

Reading the reviews (amazon, e-bay, best buy) is your best bet. Talk to your local gym and see what they would even recommend.

I did go to Sears for my elliptical, but they had a limited selection to try out. I ended up buying based on reviews from amazon.com

I bought my treadmill at GymSource in 1996 and it is still going strong.  It was a big investment, but well worth it since I hate the gym but love working out on a treadmill.  I tried a few lower priced treadmills, but found them to be too bouncy (that was at Sears).  GymSource sells treadmills for gyms, so they need to be heavy duty.  I knew that I would use the treadmill almost every day so that is how I justified the cost. I definitely got my money’s worth and then some.  Why not go there and try out their treadmills?  Then you can compare their basic model to whatever else you find.  GymSource also services their treadmills, and they come to my home every year or so to make adjustments to the belts.  Wherever you buy from, I’d make sure you know who is going to service it for you.
